Summary
[edit]DescriptionBaluarte de San Diego in Intramuros Manila.jpg |
English: Baluarte de San Diego is a spade-shaped bulwark located inside the historic district of Intramuros in Manila City. This fort was created from the remains of the upper portion of a circular watch tower built from 1586-1587.
Since it was erected, Baluarte de San Diego underwent a series of repairs and restorations after getting damaged during wars and an earthquake. The baluarte had been breached and fallen in 1762 during a battle with the British forces. After the occupation, it was restored, only to fall again due to an earthquake in 1863. Then it was once more destroyed in the Battle of Manila in 1945. The fort's most recent restoration work was completed in 1992. Today in Manila, the fort has become a popular tourist spot that depicts the history of Intramuros. A polished garden was built around the fort along with the sturdy fortification. The garden also features shaded walkways, fountains, old cannons, and structures from the preceding century. |
