Bridge When completed, this bridge will be the longest suspension bridge in the world THE earliest record of a definite project to construct abridge across the Delaware River between Philadelphiaand Camden was in 1818, when the application wasmade to the Legislature of New Jersey and later to the Legis-lature of Pennsylvania to build abridge from the Camden shore toWindmill (Smiths) Island, a distanceof 2200 feet, leaving the remainingdistance to the Pennsylvania shoreto be covered by a ferry. There does not appear to havebeen any organized effort to secure abridge over the Delaware River untilthe Legislature of New Jersey byAct approved the 17th day of April,1914, provided for the appointmentof a Commission with power toconstruct one or more bridges or Baltimore and Ohio Magazine, February, IQ22 27 its report, suggesting a bridge at theArch-Cooper Street location, advis-ing against the use of a tunnel.
