As the result of prohibition thereis increased prosperity and the div-ersion of large sums to the purchaseof better clothing, etc. Rescue work in the large citieshas, in considerable part, been re-placed by preventive work. Drunk-enness and admissions to hospitalsfor acute alcoholism have shown re-markable decline. Although alco-holism is but one part of the mesh ofevil circumstances the short-cut to-ward the removal of the evil whichprohibition has provided, promises tobe successful in diminishing not onlydisease but also poverty and crime. vSir Arthur expressed the opinionthat the fear that prohibition wouldlead to a similar ban on smoking isfantastic, and that the Americanpublic will endorse the action takenand will insist on the extension andcontinuance of prohibition. —World Digest.
