Augush ZOtS 1920 Generally this thickness must benearly as great as the necessarydepth of the notch, and the depth ofthe part clear of sap, will allow. Thewhole length of the sleeper on theunder side, will, therefore, be hewnas aforesaid, with the exception ofabout 3^ feet in the middle part,which may be left undressed. The sleepers having been notchedand dressed as aforesaid, or accordingto such other forms and dimensionsas shall at any time be furnished tothe contractor for his governmenttherein, he will lay them 4 feet apartas before mentioned, and at rightangles with, and transversely of, theroad, and nearly coincident with thesurface of the ground, but conform-able to the levels, surveys, and direc-tions to be given by the engineers,who will designate by marks andstakes, the position, horizontal andvertical, which shall go\-em the same—the contract
