Trageser, of Bureau of Rates of Pay,Escaped Watery Grave When The TuscaniaWas Sunk by Hun Submarine ;AFE, Well.No mother ever read these wordswith greater ebullitions of joythan did Mrs. Margaret S.Trageser of Baltimore, when she re-ceived a cable from her son, Charles A.Trageser, formerly of the Bureau of Ratesof Pay, informing her of his rescue fromthe ill-fatedtransport, Tus-cania, whichwas torpedoedFebruary 5 bya Hun subma-rine off theIrish coast.The cable wasreceived fromthe soldier onFebruary 10,but the pointfrom which itwas transmit-ted to the Uni-ted States wasstruck out bythe censor. Hisparents havebeen assured ofhis safety, notonly by hiscable, but alsoby official wordfrom Washing-ton. Charles A.Trageser, whowill be twenty-two years old onApril 16, wasfurloughed for military duty on Decem-ber 13, when he enlisted and was sent asstenographer to Fort Myer, Va., as amember of Company D, Sixth Battalion,Twentieth Engineers. CHARLES A. TRAGESER a short time when he was transferred toCamp American University, Washington,D. C, for his final training. While atthe institution he was promoted to therank of sergeant. As a messenger boy he entered theservice of the Company at Camdenstation. He was then about fourteen years old. Byclose study andassiduity he fit-ted himself fora more usefulposition, beingpromoted toclerk in theTraffic Depart-ment in 1914.In October ofthe same yearhe was trans-ferred as steno-grapher to theTransportationDepartment,and a year laterwent to theMotive PowerDepartment.After being inthat positionfor a short timehe was againtransferred tothe Police De-partment, andabout a yearlater took upwo rk in theoffice of thesuperintendent of station service.
