I received a cardfrom Thomas saying that he arrivedin and expected to go on to London. 25 26 THE BALTIMORE AND OHIO EMPLOYES MAGAZINE He is with the 23rd Aero Squadron. Iam going to try and see him before wego to the front. I met Ed Martin,from McMechen. His father was aBaltimore and Ohio engineer. I havenot met Burke nor any of the otherfellows yet, but I suppose I will beforelong. We get seven days leave after four months and I think I will go to Paris. Inever expected to see that place, but Iam going in September if we are not atthe front, which I think we will be.God help the Huns when we get there.I have some work to do before supper, sogood-bye, good luck and God bless you.From your son, ^Sergeant James W. Va.,on the morning of August 19, FiremanE. W. Bennett may be awarded a specialmedal of honor by President Wilson.Federal Manager A. W. Thompson hasalready sent Fireman Bennett a letter ofcommendation and a Baltimore newspaperhas declared editorially that he is as greata hero as any man on the battlefields ofEurope. Fireman Bennett was working on thesecond engine that was pulling TrainNo. 4 over the mountains. As the steephill just east of Newburg was reached,the helper engine left the rails, crashedinto an embankment and overturned,falling across the three tracks at thatpoint.
