THE BALTIMORE AND OHIO EMPLOYES MAGAZINE 11 Maryland with his parents when veryyoung and completing his education atGlenwood Institute, Howard County.He was of a most practical turn of mindand one of his early achievements wasthe designing of angle bars, which, hemaintained, would give greater safetyto trains. Instead of having the headsof the bolts holding the angle bars tothe rails all pointing in one direction, healternated them in a staggered man-ner. He also designed the ManningRail, by which the standard rail waschanged by making the head heavier,adding metal on the side of the headnext the flange of the wheel, thus pro-viding greater wearing quality, especiallyon curves. Mr. Manning married Isabelle B.Hewson, of Philadelphia, about twenty-one years ago. He is survived by a son,William Hewson Manning, and a daugh-ter, Mrs. Addinell M. Hewson, and fourbrothers, Charles T. Manning, formerlyan engineer of the Baltimore and OhioRailroad, Joseph T. Manning, Sidney T.Manning, also at
