peration, Pittsburg^h District HT least 8,000 tons of coal will beused during the present winterto heat the cars on the passengertrains of the Baltimore and Ohio. This means that 160 cars of coal will beused to make the steam supplied to thesteam heat train lines of our passengertrains during the period from Novemberto March. From twenty-five to fifty cars of thiscoal, worth, including the cost of placingon tenders, approximately $5,000, can besaved by passenger car inspectors andpassenger trainmen. Passenger car in- spectors can insure that no leaks will beallowed in steam lines, traps and steamhose connections. Passenger trainmencan see that cars are not overheated andthat steam is not wasted through exces-sive opening of the rear end train finevalve. This saving is well worth while and toobtain it no exertion beyond the ordi-nary exercise of attention to duty isrequired. The result of care in these details willbe quickly evident on the engine in re-serve capacity and in coal saving.

This creditable performance reflects the results of the individual efforts of every employewho has tried to save coal, and every one of the employes of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad hasbeen and is responsible for his share of fuel saving or fuel waste. The urgent need for fuel saving has not passed and better performan
