24 Old and New Sand Patch Tunnels o F all the improvements along thelines of the Baltimore and OhioRailroad none, perhaps, has amore unique and interesting his-tory than that connected with the con-struction of the old Sand Patch Tunnelon the Connellsville Division. ■ The cost of the old tunnel, not includ-ing approach cuts, was $375,000, or about$80 per running foot. The new tunnelnow in use cost $747,066, or at the rateof $179 per foot, not including the ap-proaches. Old Sand Patch Tunnel The old tunnel at Sand Patch, Pa., islocated on a depression through the sum-mit of the Allegheny Mountains, whichform a part of the Appalachian Plateau.Where the center line crosses this sum-mit, its elevation is 2,452 feet above meansea level. The bore of the tunnel wasdesigned and built to a twenty-two footwidth. The tunnel was evidently de-signed for double track for the smallequipment in use at the time of its con-struction. The summit of the track is atan elevation of 2,271.5 feet above sea
