THE COLD DAWX BRIGHTENED INTO A CLOUDY. BLOWY MORNING 38 THE BALTIMORE AND OHIO EMPLOYES MAGAZINE to the stables. Saddling the first horsehe saw, he led the animal out, leaped intothe saddle and rode slowly up a hill to thenorth of the inn. At the crest he stopped,dismounted and led the anmial in amongthe dense underbrush. During the night it had snowed andthe ground w^as covered with a whitecarpet two or three inches deep. As hewaited the cold dawn brightened into acloudy, blowy morning. After a while,from the direction of the inn, he heardshouts of laughter and loud calls. A fewminutes latter Ned, the mask over hisface and pistols in hand, hurried past hishiding place, afoot.
