it cars to be released rapidly.Large expenditures are being made formachine tools to supplement the oldequipment. Although, for the present, some of the old machines will requirethe use of shafting, eventually all unitsare to be operated by individual mo-tors, eliminating any shafting or beltingand providing greater SAFETY andeconomy. Electrical sub-stations areprovided at each point with rotary con-verters, furnishing both alternating anddirect current of varying voltage for thedifferent needs. The buildings are designed to take thegreatest advantage of natural light, andin addition are provided with an artifi-cial system that will insure the very bestconditions for night work. The heatingis provided by an indirect system, hotair being forced by large fans throughunderground ducts for delivery in vari-ous parts of the shop. The comfort ofemployes is otherwise taken care of bymodern and commodious toilets and washrooms, provided in various parts of the*structure for both men and women.

Cumberland Sliops—View taken from the West End of the Machine Sliop 18 THE BALTIMORE AND OHIO EMPLOYES MAGAZINE A good index of the magnitude of thetwo improvements is the estimated costof $1,740,000 for the Glenwood work and$1,350,000 for that at Cumberland. In-chided in these figures are $234,000 fornew machine tools at Cumberland anda slightly larger amount at Glenwood. The traveling cranes at Glenwood repre-sent an expenditure of ovef $275,000.Approximatel)^ $22,000 was used at eachpoint in providing the modern electricwelding systems. The work outside of the building atGlenwood was more extensive on ac-count of the situation and somewhatmore complicated on account of thenecessity of erecting the new buildingpartly on the site of existing facilities. The layout at Glenwood is more completein some respects, and this fact and a some-what lesser amount of trouble, due to thedifficulties in securing materials, has en-abled the Cumberland shop to start activerepair work ahead of Glenwo
