One of the finest of the many flag raisingceremonies that have taken place all over theSystem was held in Zanesville on the afternoonof Sunday, April 29. An imposing parade, in which the militarywas the dominant note, preceded the ceremony.Grand Marshal C. A. Barton, with his aides, O EMPLOYES MAGAZINE headed the procession, followed by the band ofthe Seventh Regiment, Ohio National Guard,Companies A and E and the Hospital Corps ofthat regiment. Then came the representativesof all the prominent fraternal societies, BoyScouts, the employes of Zanesville businesshouses, clubs, Newark Division officials andemployes and the employes of other railroadsentering Zanesville. There were about 4,000in line and it is estimated that at least 12,000witnessed the parade and the flag raisingceremonies. Theprogram was as follows: Invocation, the Rev. W. L. Whallon; song,America, lead by a chorus of girls andaccompanied by the massed bands—thecrowd was invited to join in the singing; addressby Judge A. A. Frazier, general counsel of theCompany; address by superintendent Stevens,of the Newark Division; unfurling of the flagby Master Richard Baldwin. Judge Frazier emphasized the fact that thethrill of patriotism or reverence for the Ameri-can flag is not derived from its colors or thetexture of the fabric, but from what the flag-represents. He spoke of the struggles throughwhich the nation has passed and the difficultiesencountered to keep the greatest democracyon earth equal to the demands on it.
