The writers recollection of the Mason enginesaccords with that of a veteran railroad man,who wrote to him: I well remember theseengines—the neatest, best proportioned, trim- 40 THE BALTIMORE AND OHIO EMPLOYES MAGAZINE mest engines ever built by anybody, and they didtheir work all right, too. The type has nowpractically been superseded by the Atlantic, but in its time it was the best for general service,and no better exemplification has ever beenproduced than the Mason locomotive of 1857.
