Summary

[edit]
Description
English: View of the interior of the collapsed portion of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) roundhouse at the old Clark Avenue Yard in Cleveland, Ohio. Since 1954, the roundhouse and its associated buildings have been owned by the Midwest Railway Preservation Society.

The roundhouse was built in 1906 by the B&O to replace a much smaller roundhouse owned by the Cleveland and Terminal Valley Railroad (which it had purchased in 1889. The B&O built an entirely new rail yard at a cost of $400,000 ($10.7 million in 2016 dollars). The 10-stall semicircular roundhouse measured 280 feet on the outside and 145 feet on the inside and cost $45,347 ($1.2 million in 2016 dollars). Built so it could be expanded, it never was.

The roundhouse was severely damaged in October 2003. The preservation society sold part of the roundhouse to the Northern Ohio Lumber and Timber Co. in 2002. Northern Ohio was doing demolition work inside its part of the building when the contractor mistakenly took down a load-bearing wall. A portion of the roof collapsed with it. Two days later, the exterior wall fell over.

The roundhouse is one of only two left in the state of Ohio.
