And the Baltimore Siiii, in an edi-torial concerning the death of Colonel Marshall, has the following to say: In the death of Colonel Charles Marshall, Baltimore loses one of her foremostcitizens, a lawyer of distinguished ability, a man of strong personality and of thehighest sense of honor, who had the respect and esteem of the entire community.Colonel Marshall was a member of the Virginia family which gave to the countryone of its ablest jurists—Chief Justice Marshall of the Supreme Court of the UnitedStates. During the Civil War he served on the staff of General Robert E. Lee andpossessed to a conspicuous degree the confidence of the great Southern leader. ColonelMarshall took an active interest in public affairs. He was a man of deep and pro-nounced convictions, whose influence was always exerted in behalf of good gov-ernment.

HISTORY OF BALTIMORE 675 ROBINSON WESLEY CATOR Robinson Wesley Cator, late a member of the present firm of Arm-strong, Cator & Company, is among that class of citizens who, in days goneby, added to the growth and importance of Baltimore, who became promi-nent by the force of their own individual character, and at a period whenit may be truly said that there were giants in the land, giants in intellect,in energy and enterprise, and who, dying, left behind them imperishablefootprints on the sand of time, stands in the foremost rank. But fewcitizens have lived in our midst since the foundation of Baltimore, whohave left a brighter record for every trait of character that constitutesreal greatness, and certainly none whose memory shall float down the streamof time more honored and revered than that which heads this sketch. Therecord of such a life is well worthy of preservation, and in it the cominggeneration may find much for improvement and instruction. Robinson Wesley Cator, son of
