Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Baltic Sea is situated in Northern Europe and stretches over more than 160,335 square miles (415,265 square kilometers). It connects with the Atlantic Ocean and also receives fresh water from a number of rivers and streams. The mixing of saline ocean and fresh riverine water creates a body of brackish water – one of the largest such bodies on Earth.

Nine countries have coastlines on the Baltic Sea. These are Denmark, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, and Russia. The cultural, political, and economic views of the more than 15 million people who live on the coast of the Baltic, as well of the more than 85 million living in the Baltic region, are quite diverse. Yet they are all connected by this important body of water. One of the major challenges facing the Baltic Sea is attaining agreement on how to care for the ecosystem, while still serving the needs of the people who call the region home.
