August 31, 1856.We walked along the river and outside the house.The new offices and the yard are excellent; and thelittle garden on the west side, with the eagle fountainwhich the King of Prussia gave me, and which used tobe in the greenhouse at Windsor^ is extremely pretty;as are also the flower-beds under the w^alls of the sidewhich faces the Dee. There are sculptured arms on thedifferent shields, gilt, which has a very good effect; anda bas-relief under our windows—not gilt—representingSt. Hubert, with St. Andrew on one side and St. Georgeon the other side: all done by Mr. Thomas.^ * He died in March, 1862. At half-past one oclock we started in Highland state,—Albert in a royal Stuart plaid, and I and thegirls in skirts of the same,—with the ladies (who hadonly returned at five in the morning from the ball atMar Lodge) and gentlemen, for the Linn of Dee, to openthe new bridge there.
