Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Commonly know as the J.C. Penney Building from the Historic American Buildings Survey, despite J.C.Penney never having occupied this building, it was constructed in 1901 for retail and office space by the Hemrich Bros. Brewing Company. First known as the Ankeny Block (origin unknown) in the early 1900s this building contained several saloons, a drug store, and Ballard's Post Office for about a decade before it was moved to Market Street. The Portland Hotel shared space with various professional offices on the second floor in the 1900s.
