Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Originally known as the Matthes Block, the first two floors were built in 1903 by contractors Williams & Bamburg for Albin & Oscar Matthes, who operated the Matthes Brothers Saloon in the corner storefront. C. Alfred Breitung was the original architect. The second floor was designed specifically for the Elks Lodge. In 1920 the Elks purchased the building outright and commissioned the architectural firm of McQuaker & Horrocks to add the third floor, which had been part of the Matthes Brothers' original plans. Oddly though, only 3 of the third floor windows facing Ballard Avenue align with the ones on the second floor, giving the already asymmetrical façade a jumbled appearance. The corner was later occupied by a branch of the Dexter Horton Bank, later Seafirst. The Ballard Commercial Club occupied space on the second floor in the late 1920s and promoted Ballard as a destination during its largest building boom. The building is currently part of the Olympic Athletic Club complex.
