Summary
[edit]DescriptionBallard - Markusen Bldg.jpg |
English: The Markusen Building at 5443 (originally 349-51) Ballard Ave NW was built in late 1904, possibly by George Jacobs, who was building a 50'x90' (this building's exact dimensions) store and flat building in late 1904. It would be one of the earliest projects of prolific local architect Victor W. Voorhees, who at the time was in the short-lived firm of Fisher & Voorhees. The upper floor was originally a boarding house run by Hannah Severtson and was later known as the Princess Hotel. The blank cartouche above the second story windows once carried the name and construction date but had long ago been chiseled away, it's been blank since at least 1936. Sanborn maps indicate that when this building was built it had bay windows where the double windows are now.
