Hero Aiewed the lovely oceanThen she spake with sweet emotion, Neptune, ruler of the sea,Lovely god, canst thou deceive?No! the wretch Ill neer believe; Thou wert ever true to me —, Oft may mankind prove untrue; Cruel is a fathers heart.Ever kind and gentle thou; Hast thou felt the lovers smart? On this barren, storm-beat rock,I would ever lonely walk, And in endless sorrow pine.But thou bringSt upon thy waveWithout boat or bridge, the brave To my arms, across the brine.Full of horrors are thy depths, Terrible thy billowy flood.But when love implores thy grace, Leanders courage thee subdued.
