Description |
English: Carved ivory ball, original ethnology card reads- "Representing the Takarabune or ship of Fortune in which the immortals used to disport themselves. Several of them are portrayed and can be identified by their attributes and also the hairy-tailed tortoise on the gunwale. This is a netsuke or girdle-toggle. Signed." The Takarabune was a phantom treasure ship of the Japanese. It sails every year on New Years Day into port, bringing good fortune to those who see it. According to tradition, if a picture of the Takarubane is purchased on New Year's Day and placed under the pillow it will bring good fortune. |
