Description

Bales Marketplace (also known as Bales Thriftway), in Cedar Mill, Oregon, was located on NW Cornell Road just west of Saltzman Road and was in business in Cedar Mill from 1961 until 2019. It was originally located on the other side of Saltzman Road (in a building later occupied by a Walgreen's and a hardware store), moving from there to its second and final Cedar Mill location in 1988, to expand its size. The U.S. Post Office in this store was also a feature of the old store.

Another Thriftway store, opened on Farmington Road in Aloha in 1974, became a Bales Thriftway after being acquired by Odus T. Bales in the early 1980s. (Earlier, Mr. Bales owned a Thriftway on Ivanhoe Street in St. Johns, from 1951 to 1970. He died in 1998 at the age of 89.) Cedar Mill and Aloha are both unincorporated areas in Washington County, Oregon, and within the Portland metropolitan area.
