Het markante gebouwtje is eigenlijk een bakoven die zou dateren van omstreeks 1600. Tot na WO II werd de oven beurtelings door drie families in gebruik genomen die per bakbeurt ongeveer 40 broden produceerden. Elke familie bezat een sleutel en diende zelf voor hout te zorgen. De oven werd steeds minder gebruikt en werd min of meer verwaarloosd, tot in 1999 de heemkundige kringen van Haaltert en Erpe-Mere en het Haalterts gemeentebestuur voor een grondige restauratie zorgden. Een rustbank en picknicktafel, geplaatst door de VTB-afdeling Haaltert, maken van dit plekje een uitgelezen rustpunt om te genieten van de stilte van Den Dotter. De oven is nu niet meer courant in gebruik, maar bij speciale gelegenheden worden nog ‘ovenkoeken’ gebakken. |
