Summary

[edit]
Description

Part of plate 3, Baist's Real Estate Maps of Surveys of Seattle (1905). Shows building-by-building detail of roughly the area from James Street to Spring Street and from 4th to 9th Avenues. Interstate 5 now firmly divides this into Downtown and First Hill; as the map shows, it was once much more knitted together.

The Carnegie Library on this map remains the location of the Seattle Public Library (2 buildings later). Providence Hospital moved about a two kilometers west; its site became what would now be called the old Federal Courthouse. Everything between 6th and 7th on this map, including the Central School is replaced by Interstate 5 (not that much of the rest remains). Trinity Parish Church, Episcopalian (near the bottom of this image at 8th and James, in pink) is right where it was. So is the building of the U.S. Gov't Assay Office (also in pink, a bit up and to the right from there); it now houses the German House / German Club / Deutsches Haus.

This is a raw image of a plastic-covered document: some reflections and also some shadow.
