Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Bailey Check Cashing, 3101 Bailey Avenue at Westminster Avenue, Buffalo, New York, November 2020. The building was erected (after the demolition of its 1920-era predecessors on what was once two adjacent lots) in 1959, but its charming and consciously historically evocative Colonial Revival style hearken back to the earlier parts of the 20th century: a lovely tetrastyle Doric temple front protrudes in front of an entrance that's crowned with a swan's neck pediment and dentil row and flanked by a pair of matching windows with white shutters, and topping the side-gabled roof is a cupola crowned by a weathervane. By this point in architectural history, High Classical styling such as this was unusual and generally reserved for institutions of prestige such as banks, and indeed this building spent the majority of its life as a bank: initially the Kensington branch of the locally-headquartered Marine Trust Company, then under the ownership of successor company HSBC, then for its last years as a KeyBank. Bailey Check Cashing has occupied the space since 2016.
