Summary

[edit]
Description

Baha'i Temple in Wilmette (1947). It is the only Baha'i House of Worship in the United States and the oldest in the world. The project was conceived in 1903, when a group of Chicago Baha'is decided to build a temple similar to the one under construction in Ashgabat, Russia. After the project was approved in 1907 by `Abdu'l-Bahá, the leader of the religion, funds were raised from Baha'i all over the world. Groundbreaking occurred in 1912, featuing a visit from `Abdu'l-Bahá. Construction began in the 1920s, and continued throughout the 1930s. It was a popular stop for visitots in town for the Century of Progress Exposition in 1933-34. The exterior was finally completed in 1943 and the interior in 1947. The gardens were designed in 1951, and the temple finally opened on May 2, 1953. Over 3,500 people attended the first services. The number nine is of great importance to the Baha'i, so many features are found nine times, including the pillars. The Illinois Office of Tourism lists it as one of the Seven Wonders of Illinois.

This is an image of a place or building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States of America. Its reference number is 78001140.
