WW2 Service- Long Range Patrol (LRP) and Long Range Desert Group (LRDG). Served in Africa and Italy and was the only New Zealander to serve in 'Popski's Private Army', the PPA. The Long Range Desert Group, initially known as the Long Range Patrol, was one of the first special forces formed during WW2, and although part of the British forces, the unit was made up mostly of New Zealanders from 2NZEF with some Rhodesians, South Africans, British and Australians. The LRDG together with the Special Air Service played a secretive but vital role in the Allied victory. The LRDG was primarily a reconnaissance unit but also carried out raids behind enemy lines, and disrupted enemy communications and supply lines.
