Belonged to 76040 L-Cpl John William Cottle Lance Corporal John William Cottle left New Zealand with the 40th Reinforcements E Company, sailing to England on HMNZT Tahiti. He died of disease en route to England on 4th September 1918. After calling in at Capetown the Tahiti was hit by the influenza epidemic, then prevalent in Capetown, and although no men were allowed ashore while in port, Tahiti was boarded by locals.
