Title |
Badge, heart shaped |
||
Description |
English: Cast lead alloy badge in the form of a heart, well modelled and in fairly deep relief. Down the centre is a line of raised pellets and the outer edge is marked by a line of small pellets. The back is plain but down its length runs a sharply defined groove 2.0mm wide x 1.5mm deep with a round bottom. Heart shaped badges have been discussed by Spencer (2010, p.321-3) who mentions 50 examples from London, mostly found on the Thames foreshore. He links them to use of the heart as a symbol of love during the fourteenth and fifteenth century. Many of the London badges bear a crowned heart or flowers, both absent from this find but the pealed boarder is typical. |
