Summary
[edit]DescriptionBadajoz – Obelisco 2012 – A las víctimas de los Sitios, 1811 & 1812.jpg |
English: Badajoz was besieged twice during the Guerra de la Independencia Española (Peninsular War), first in 1811 when Spain was invaded and occupied by the napoléonic régime (►https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Badajoz_%E2%80%93_Obelisco_a_la_Memoria_del_General_Menacho.jpg), and again in 1812 when freed by the Allied forces led by Lord Wellington. To commemorate the bi-centenary of the Liberation of Badajoz on April 6, 1812, an obelisk designed by Estanislao García Olivares has been erected at the foot of the Santa Maria Bastion, an expanse now called "Parque de los Sitios de Badajoz". The Obelisk was inaugurated on April 21, 2012 in presence of representatives of Spain, Portugal and the United Kingdom, and also France. There are four commemorative plaques on the basis of the monument. |
