Title
backplate of dress hook
Description
English: Silver gilt dress hook cast on three sides, each with three concave bosses surrounded by filigree work of rings and pellets, and mounted above by a foliate pendant consisting of five sprigs or stems, each ending in a pellet which mimics a bud. Behind the pendant, a recurving hook is soldered onto the back plate. The back plate is scalloped on its two vertical edges; one scallop on each side is damaged. The back plate is punctured by a rectangular aperture which was probably intended for sewing permanently into the dress. This dress-hook is in the form of a miniature lamp or sconce.

The overall length of the dress-hook is 28.8 mm; the hook itself is 13.9 mm long; the length of the body of the hook, including the foliate moulding is 23.5 mm; the length of the back plate is 17.5 mm; the rectangular aperture is 7.5 mm long by 4.7 mm wide; the width of the dress-hook is 16 mm and its depth or thickness 7.3 mm. It weighs 4.84 g.
Similar to an example from Wanborough, Wiltshire pictured in The Treasure Annual Report for 2000, p.91, Fig. 183, No.183, which is dated to the 16th century.
