Summary

[edit]
Description

Backbeach washover channel with ripple marks in Florida, USA.

Asymmetrical ripple marks have a long side and a short side, when viewed in cross-section. They form in a one-directional current by wind or water. The current direction was toward the short side of each ripple.

The asymmetrical ripples shown above are in a backbeach washover channel that runs parallel to the marine shoreline of a Florida barrier island. The ripples formed in water when the channel was active, probably during a then-recent storm.

Locality: marine beach in the far-southern part of the western shoreline of Cayo Costa Island, southwestern Florida, USA
