Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Drawing by George Hickes (1642-1715) of the back of Ædwen's brooch, an 11th century Anglo-Saxon silver disc brooch discovered by a ploughman in Sutton, Isle of Ely, Cambridgeshire in 1694. The circular inscription around the edge reads ÆDVǷEN ME AG AGE HYO DRIHTEN / DRIHTEN HINE AǷERIE ÐE ME HIRE ÆTFERIE / BVTON HYO ME SELLE HIRE AGENES ǷILLES meaning Ædwen owns me, may the Lord own her. May the Lord curse him who takes me from her, unless she gives me of her own free will. Inscribed on the silver strip are seven cryptic runic or pseudo-runic letters, the meaning of which is not understood. British Museum (1951,1011.1).
