Looking at Boston from Cambridge on Mass Ave. Taken with Leica X1. Sold the D-Lux 5 and got an X1. I got great use out of the DLux-5. But, I just wanted it to be so much better. Don't get me wrong, it's one of the best small sensor point and shoot I have used--and I have used many. In its class, it had the fastest focus and it had the best high ISO performance; it was great for street shooting--better than Ricoh GRD III. I really liked having the 24mm to 90mm range. BUT, the results weren't necessarily outstanding. After all, it still had a small sensor prone to produce blown out highlights and muddy shadows that are impossible to fix post-process. It didn't handle well in certain lighting situation--like the sunset; it overexposes the highlights (tweaking EV didn't really help balancing the light and darks). I decided to take the plunge and get the X1; Focus (on firmware 1.0) is slower than the D Lux 5 but I think it's not slower than the Olympus E-P2 or E-PL. It focuses much faster than Sigma DP2s. Focus has always been spot on, as well. The image quality is outstanding, IMO. JPEGs are also really good--for posting on the web, JPEGs are just fine. I definitely need to shoot more to get a better sense of what the X1 could do. So far, I have not been disappointed (except for the price). |
