tle 52 Baby Birds at Home gymnast whether it is standing on a branch, clinging upside down underneath it, orswinging at the very tip of a long slendertwig, it is equally at home and alwayshappy and vivacious. Insects form the chief food of this speciesduring the spring and summer, but through-out the autumn and winter, seeds, berries, and the kernels of nuts become acceptable. It is readily attracted to the garden byhanging out a meat bone or the kernels ofBarcelona nuts. The Cole Tit makes its nest in holes intrees, stumps, old walls and dry banks. Itis built of dead grass, moss, wool, hair, feathers and down. The eggs number from five to as manyeven as ten, although seven or eight maygenerally be found. They are white withlight red spots and freckles, and bear a re-markable resemblance to those of the MarshTit. The sitting bird hisses like a snake, ifmolested. Young Cole Tits wear the distinguish-ing white mark of their species at theback of the head, as soon as they growtheir feathers.

The Hedge Sparrow THIS familiar little bird is not a sparrowat all, as may readily be seen from theappearance of its slender bill. It really be-longs to the Warbler family. It hops about in gardens, orchards, parks, and woods all the summer long, picking upcaterpillars and insects. The male never seems to be tired of rattl-ing off his sweet and merry little song.Whether it be in error or simply an over-flowing of the joy within his little heart it isimpossible to say, but he occasionally breaksinto song at night-time. In the winter Hedge Sparrows leave thewoods and alter their diet. As there arevery few insects to be found they hop roundfowl-runs, farmyards, and dwelling-houses, insearch of seeds, crumbs, and other trifles. You can always be sure of the call-noteof the Hedge Sparrow. It is a plaintive andrather shrill peep-peep. 53 54 Baby Birds at Home People who dislike the name of Sparrowfor this species call it the Hedge Accentor, and in many parts of the country it is knownas the D
