ernels of Barcelona nuts. It is a strong, active, fearless bird, with a call note some-thing like that of the chaffinch, pink, pink.In the springtime this is varied by another, highly suggestive of the sounds made bythe process of sharpening a saw with a file. The nest is built in holes in trees, oldwalls, underneath plant pots standing upsidedown in gardens, and occasionally in the oldhome of a crow, magpie, or even that of ablackbird. The writer has on two occasionsfound a Great Tit sitting on a clutch of eggslaid in the old home of the last mentionedbird, which had been lined with rabbitsdown. It is made of dry grass, moss, hair, wool, and feathers, and two broods are some-times reared in the same structure in aseason. The chicks are fed by both parent birds, and a few days before fledging become verynoisy in their clamourings for food.

Although plentiful all round our coast dur-ing the winter, this species, curiously enough, rarely breeds either in England or Wales,in spite of the fact that it does so com-monly in certain parts of Scotland and inthe north and west of Ireland. The nest is built amongst heather andcoarse grass, on ledges and in crevices of rockson the sea-shore, and upon islands in bothsalt and fresh water lochs. It is made ofheather, dry seaweed and grass, and is fre- J 65 66 Baby Birds at Home quently a rather bulky structure. In Scot-land, where small islands abound in some ofthe great sea lochs, the Common Gull is oftenro
