Summary

[edit]
Description

Baboon statue, created in Egypt about 1391 to 1353 BC. Found in Egypt, but the location is not clear.

This statue is of red quartzite. Animals could represent any god, depending on the context in which they were presented.

Baboons were often depicted with an erection. The baboon penis is one of the largest of all primates, and baboon males often squat with their erection proudly displayed. It was often believed that baboon males were born circumcised, which was a symbol of their divine nature.

Normally, this statue would be symbolic of the god of writing and fertility, Thoth. But the inscription, which is damaged, indicates the statue was intended to represent some other god.
