Title
BULLA
Description
English: A medieval cast lead alloy papal bulla of Pope Alexander IV dating from AD 1254 - 1261. The "obverse" carries the name of the Pope in three lines A[LE]/XANDE(R)/PP (I)II(I); and the "reverse" has the usual portraits of Saints Paul and Peter under the letters [SPA SPE]. There would have been a cross between the two portraits but this is not visible.

The bulla has been broken in two along the lineal hole which the attachment cord would have run through; probably due to plough damage. One half is slightly buckled, and damage to the top means that the letters SPA SPE cannot be seen. Some letters of the Pope's name cannot be seen and two of the four I's are unclear; but Tim Pestell confirms that this is a bulla of Alexander IV not Alexander III. It has a light cream patina with some discolouratian. The damage has made the bulla oval in shape 35.64mm x 42.53 wide x4.93mm thick. It weighs 35.72mm. A big plus is that despite the breakage, both halves were found, and are kept together.

There are five other examples of bullae of the Pope on the PAS database; SUSS-2830356, SWYOR-33A1C7, NLM-3B50D0, LIN-544D81,YORYMB1410; (the last one has no image).
