[edit]DescriptionBUCKLE - Scotland - Ross-shire Constabulary (2494701982).jpg |
Another old buckle, and an intrguing one. Although the wording says "Ross-shire Constabulary" the centrepiece is not the coat of arms of the County at all, but of the Burgh of Dingwall (the County town of Ross-shire). The force - which covered the 2nd largest County in Scotland - also called itself Ross County Police and Ross & Cromarty Constabulary at various times (and somtiems at the same time!!) It is thought that this is an early (and pristine) example, as it is unlikely that it could have been made after 1889 when Cromartyshire officially became part of the Force. (From 1880 the force had been under the command of the Ross-shire Chief Officer but it was not an official merger at that stage). Ross & Cromarty Constabulary merged with Sutherland Constabulary in 1963 to form Ross & Sutherland Constabulary, and then in 1975 became part of the present Northern Constabulary.. |
