Title
BUCKLE
Description
English:

A cast copper-alloy pin of Medieval date (c. 1250 - c. 1400).

The pin has an oval loop at one end, which has become detached from an annular buckle or possibly brooch. The pin is oval in cross-section with a slightly rounded top. It narrows slightly throughout its length from the loop towards the tip. The tip is bent downwards slightly with a rounded upper edge in profile. On the top of the shaft, near the junction with the loop there is a short raised section divided. The loop is formed from bending the pin after the collar into a rough loop that touch's the bottom of the pin at the same point as the collar.

The pin is 38.8mm long including the loop, 4.13mm thick and weighs 3.44 grams.

The size suggests this is a buckle pin rather than a brooch pin. Similar buckle pins with slight variations in the raised moulding were found in archaeological excavations in London in contexts dated c.1250-1400 (Egan and Pritchard 1991, 115-116, fig. 75, refs. 541, 547 and 549).
