Title
BUCKLE
Description
English:

A complete cast copper-alloy single looped buckle with plate dating to the medieval period (1150-1350).

The narrowed and off-set strap bar is compatible with the majority of buckles of this period and variety. The outside edge of the frame protrudes at each side and is decorated in its central part with parallel groves, of which the notch is the widest and most central one. The frame is oval in cross section and flat in profile. The complete cast pin narrows towards the notch and is decorated with a raised transverse ridge near the loop. The plate is plain and rectangular in shape flares slightly towards the frame. The only visible decoration can be found on its narrower end and is what would have been the hole for the rivet. The plate is 20.29 mm long, 10.06 mm at its widest point and 1.08 mm thick. It weighs 3.07g.

A very similar buckle can be found in Egan & Pritchard (2002: 77, no. 312) and DEV-792C34 is also similar example.

This basic form and all its varieties were very common between the 12th and 14th century. The main decorative motifs on the outer edge show no clear chronological trend (Egan and Pritchard, 1991).
