Title
BUCKLE
Description
English:

An incomplete Post Medieval copper alloy double-looped buckle, probably dating to the 16th century. One of two oval loops survive, with a central bar flanked by rosettes. The buckle frame is D-shaped in cross section, and with the outer edge of each frame expanding into a central point which is moulded into a series of knops, probably a rossette or other floral design. Traces of a black laquer coating survive on the surface.

Dimentions: length 28.1mm; width 27.1mm; thickness 1.9mm; it weighs 2.75g.

Similar buckles with more rounded rosettes tend to be attributed a later 16th-century date (Egan 2005, 35; ref. 88, found in a 17th century context but assumed to be residual), although the type must pre-date 1545 as it was found on the Mary Rose (Gardiner ed. 2005, 104; ref. 82A5069). Numerous comparible examples can be seen recorded on this database, as well as published by Margeson (1993: 31, no. 174). An example with a similarly pointed frame is illustrated by Whitehead (2006: 66, no. 410), which he dates to AD 1550-1650.
