Title
BUCKLE
Description
English:

Complete buckle with plate and pin, all made from copper alloy and all with traces of gilding. The single-loop frame measures 15mm x 13mm and is 3mm thick. It has an offset narrowed bar. The outside edge is rounded on the front and flat on the reverse, and swells gently to the centre. The plate is made from a rectangular piece of copper alloy folded to form a shape 40mm in length and 13mm wide on the front and a much smaller underplate, 24mm by 9mm, on the reverse. A pin slot and frame recesses have been cut to form two hinge loops. Three copper alloy rivets attach the two halves of the plate together, with two more rivets towards the bottom end of the plate. All of the rivets have large rounded knob-shaped heads. There is decoration of a zig-zag groove across the plate next to the hinge loops.

The buckle weighs 8.64g. It can be compared with a similar buckle with only three rivets, found in a mid 13th century context in London (Egan and Pritchard 1991, no. 304). AD 1200-1300.
