Title
BUCKLE
Description
English: An fragment from a purse frame of cast copper-alloy, dating from the Late Medieval to Post Medieval period, c.AD 1440-1600. Only part of the frame survives.

The curved bar of the frame is oval in cross section  (c.4.9mm by 4.3mm)and has been bent almost into a U shape. Projecting from one edge are the remains of five sewing loops. This would have been the underside of the bar. Four loops are complete being sub-rectangular 8mm wide, 2.1mm thick and project 3.8mm) and pierced by circular holes (c.2.4mm diameter) the second survives as only half the loop. There are traces of decoration on the upper edge of the bar close to its centre and one break made of incised diagonal and transverse lines.

The item has a medium green patina

The bar fragment is 113.7mm long, 50.4mm wide, 9.7mm thick and weighs 30.43 grams.

A similar purse frame is illustrated by Read ( 2001: 128, 132, Fig.86, No.917) which is dated to c. AD1450-1500. Similar examples are on the database for comparison and include PUBLIC-B73BBC, BUC-D762E2, DEV-E27ABF and LIN-45D05D.
