Title
BUCKLE
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman to Early Medieval propeller-shaped belt stiffener, dating to the period AD 350-450. It consists of a flat oval central plate and two symmetrical sub-trapezoidal extensions, one either side. The outer edges of these plates are bevelled, and there are broken circular perforations positioned in the centre of the two extensions at their squared terminals. The upper surface of the central plate is decorated with a ring-and-dot motif comprising a circular recess at the centre and around this a recessed circumferential band. Both recessed zones have the remains of inset red enamel. The reverse of the central plate and the extensions are flat and undecorated.

The copper-alloy surfaces of the mount have mid-green patination with patches of light brown in places.

The mount measures 18.04mm in length, 8.61mm in width and weighs 1.08 grams.

For broadly similar mounts recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database, see SUR-788AA2, HAMP-F7A764, NMS-4EAF18 and SF-FE50D9.
