Title
BUC-077AC4 NAIL CLEANER
Description
English: A nearly complete copper alloy cast nail cleaner of Crummy Type 2a, dating to the Roman period (mid-late 1st - 2nd century AD). This nail cleaner consists of a suspension loop facing the same plane as the blade, a highly decorated neck, and leaf-shaped, tapering bifurcated blade. It is decorated with a moulded neck, with parts ranging from a squared circular bead, to a collar, to a square drum, and a spherical bead, and ending in a thin collar at the cleaner's rounded shoulders. The central drum is decorated on all four sides with an incised "X", and there is another larger off-centre "X" on its blade. Although it is common to see these objects either decorated with complicated moulding or incised decoration, this example has both decorative elements. Some PAS parallels include: SUSS-4C80D7; LIN-BC1184; NMS-9CA8E5; SUSS-508468; NARC-AA33A2. See also, Crummy 1995, Fig. 62, Nos. 1872 and 1874.
