Title
BROOCH
Description
English:

An incomplete Roman copper alloy Colchester derivative dolphin style brooch dating to the period AD 75- 175. It is complete except for the spring and pin.

The brooch's wings are sub oval in cross section with an open back and perforated wing caps. The front of these wings are decorated with incised lines near their terminals..

The bow projects from the front of the wings and then narrows down its length to a pointed foot. It is D-shaped in cross section with a flat reverse and convex front. It has reeded band down the centre of the bow with bevelled sides. The catchplate projects from the back of the bow and is triangular in plan and flat.

The brooch is a medium green colour.

The brooch is 34.76mm long, 22.12mm wide and 5.2mm thick.

Similar examples to this brooch illustrated by Hattat (2000: 298) No.1390 and Mackreth (2011: 50) No. 1941. Both of which suggest the form matches a Dolphin type brooch dating to  The latter two sources date this form to the end of the 1st century AD and the early 2nd century.
