Title
BROOCH
Description
English:

An incomplete copper alloy Roman brooch of the Polden Hill type dating to AD 75-175. Only the pin and spring mechanism are missing from the brooch.

The wings survive to a width of 14.4mm and are semi-cylindrical with incomplete perorated wing caps with an open back.

The bow projects from the top and front of the wings, their being a perforated lug at bow head /wings junction now filled with iron corrosion product. The bow narrows down its length to a rounded foot. It has a decorative ridge running from the edge of the lug which thins to eventually merge with the front of the bow around half way down its length.

A catchplate projects from the back of the bow whose outer edge is folded over 180 degrees to provide a rest for the pin.

The brooch a light blue/green patina. The bow is bent sligtly to the right just above the point where its catchplate begins.

The brooch is 28.9mm long, 14.4mm wide and weighs 2.17 grams.

Similar examples to this brooch illustrated by Hattat (2000: 298)  and Mackreth (2011: 49) No. 1588. Both of which suggest the form matches a Dolphin type brooch dating to  The latter two sources date this form to the end of the 1st century AD and the early 2nd century.
