Title
BROOCH
Description
English:

A Roman copper alloy twisted trumpet brooch with an integral single lug and catchplate. The pin is missing.

The head is ovate with a single centrally positioned integral vertical lug to the reverse. A circular sectioned bow extends from the front of the head initially being wide and bulbous and then narrowing slightly to a circular acanthus moulding flanked by double banded circular collars above and below. The bow ends in a foot, above which is a trippler moulded transverse collar. The foot itself expands outwards and to the sides of the bow. A trapezoidal catchplate projects from the reverse. The catchplate's upper edge curves to meet the back of the bow.

The brooch is a medium green colour. The bow has been bent over c.110 degrees backwards just above the acanthus moulding

The brooch is 482.4mm long, 13.3mm long and 9.3mm thick.

Similar examples of this brooch are illustrated by Hattat (2000: 326) who defines these as Trumpet Brooches dating to the 1st and 2nd century AD.  Bayley and Butcher (2004, 163) further class into four groups, A,B, C and D. This example is a Group B which dates them to the 2nd century. Mackreth (2011: 84, pl.81, No.5016) illustrates a similar brooch which he defines as a standard trumpet brooch type 1.2c2 which dates to the mid second century AD.
